Hey ARO! Are there any runners in the crowd? Well, if so, I have some information for you. The Memphis Runners Track Club has listed two upcoming events that you may be interested in: the Civitan 5K and the Gipson Guitar 5K. Both are on June 12 with one in the evening and on that morning. You’ll have to be pretty awesome to participate in both races; I can barely imagine running in one! Actually, I can barely image running,
The Civitan 5K is taking place at Shelby Farms, and is celebrating children and adults with special needs. Wheelchair participants are welcome, if not encouraged to participate! Registration is still open, and you will be able to register on race day as well.
The Gipson Guitar 5K is on June 12 at 7 pm. They’re hailing it as “the Saturday night run and party that signals the official start of summer fun!” There’s even a roof top after party after the event! The race takes place at 2nd at Beale St.
Be sure to check out the events websites for more information, and get ready to sprint into summer!

Mother’s Day Brunch @ the MBG

Treat Mom to a special Mother’s Day Brunch at the Memphis Botanic Garden from 10:30 am to 2 pm, on Sunday, May 9th. This unforgettable experience in the Japanese Garden will feature a gourmet buffet, live music by the Memphis Jazz Orchestra with Tom Prestigiacomo, roses for mom, and children’s crafts. The best part of the brunch (in my opinion) are the carriage rides and adult beverages, though they will be an additional cost.
Ticket prices are as follows: MBG members: $30, Non-members: $40, Children 2-12 years: $10, Under 2: FREE
Come out and show your Mom how much you care! Or just make her a cake and buy her some flowers; moms are pretty much happy with anything you do.
Nightmare scares up $32.2 mill

Honestly ARO, the first ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ scared the wits out of me as a child. Sure, the next few were more humorous than scary, mainly because I knew what to expect, but what I didn’t expect was for Warner Bros.’ New Line to make a remake. Admittedly, we should have seen it coming, what with all of the other film remakes going on, i.e. Halloween, Clash of the Titans, etc.
Well, you know how people love to be scared out of their minds, and the box office numbers proved this once again, as ‘Nightmare’ made $32.2 million this past weekend. Amazing right? I’m not a big fan of scary movies, so I’ll wait until this one comes out on DVD so that I can hide under my comforter in the privacy of my own bedroom.
Here are the stats from this weekend at the movies:
1. “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” $32.2 million.
2. “How to Train Your Dragon,” $10.8 million.
3. “Date Night,” $7.6 million.
4. “The Back-up Plan,” $7.2 million.
5. “Furry Vengeance,” $6.5 million.
First Round, Check!

The 2010 NFL Draft is well on it’s way. Many of those who made mock drafts in the days preceding the actual draft, found that many of their predictions were spot on. Sam Bradford was this year’s No. 1 draft pick, going to the St. Louis Rams. They definitely have a quality QB in Bradford; with the accuracy of his throws, he’s sure to be a pivotal player in his rookie season. Now if only they could build the support around him….
Tennesse’s own Eric Berry was chosen as the 5th overall pick, and he’s headed to Kansas City. Though the Chiefs needed a new offensive lineman, they gained a solid playmaker in the secondary. Here’s hoping that he shines in his rookie season as well.
Stay tuned to ESPN for the rest of the draft!
Have you been following the draft? What do you think so far?
Who knew that roller skating could be a contact sport?

Maybe I should start paying more attention to the whole roller derby sport. I honestly didn’t know it was as popular as it is. On Saturday, April 10th, all three of Memphis’ Roller Derby home teams will be competing against each other at the Pipkin Building at the Fairgrounds.
For those that don’t know, the Memphis Roller Derby is a group of more than 50 women athletes, dedicated to the sport of skating, along with coaches, trainers and volunteers. The MRD has four teams: the Hustling’ Rollers (national travel team), the PrissKilla Presley’s, the Angels of Death, and the Women of Mass Destruction. These women are no strangers to bumps, bruises, and cuts, and this is with protective gear!
The bout (what those in the roller derby call competitions) will be on Saturday at 6 pm. Doors open at 5 pm. Adults are $10 while children aged 6-12 are $5.
Have you ever been to a Memphis Roller Derby bout?
Do you know what kind of puppy will perk up your pad?

I’m an animal lover. Always have been. Throughout the years I’ve kept a good number of pets. My favorite pet was my first dog; a beautiful brown and black German Shepard named Frisky. The only problem with Frisky was that I knew that when I moved from my parent’s home, I would have to leave her behind because she was not an apartment friendly pet.
So comes the question, what kind of dogs are suitable for apartments? I know that the pups that immediately come to mind are Yorkies, Chihuahuas and the like, but they are not the only dogs that you can choose from. I know that a lot of guys out there may not necessarily want a little Yorkie in their bachelor pad.
So, I’ve found a list that has some great recommendations for your new canine compadres. Here a few:
Yorkshire Terrier: I love these little dogs! With their teddy bear faces and chubby little bodies, you really can’t get any cuter. They love to spend the days lounging around on the couch, waiting for you to come home. Once you do, they’re a regular ball of energy! Take note, these dogs do require regular grooming.
Boxers: These are among the larger of the apartment friendly dogs. Brief daily walks will keep them happy, and their short haired coats are very easy to manage.
Pugs: I love their little smushed in faces! These are the class clown of the apartment suitable dogs. They don’t need extra care when it comes to grooming, and like any dog, a brief walk will do well to keep them happy and healthy.
No matter what dog you choose, I’m sure that with the right amount of love and care, they will become a crucial part of your family right away.
What type of dog do you own, or do you want to own?

Support Local Restaurants

Now, I know that I love a good double cheeseburger now and again from McDonalds. But many times, I try to eat at a local restaurant to get that good, down home feeling that I know no one else can get unless they live in my city. That makes it all the more special.
I’m sure that you know of which shops to head to around Memphis, but just in case you don’t:
- The Beauty Shop (yeah, I know it sounds like a salon, but the food is GREAT trust me!)
- Muddy’s Bake Shop (you’ve GOT to try the Shady Wake pecan pie!)
- Corky’s (Great B-B-Q)
- And Huey’s to name a few.
The food is great and the service is greater. Who better to dine with than those who reside in your own backyard? Head out to these restaurants today!
What local restaurants do you frequent?
No Funeral for my Smartphone Battery??

I think that my Android phone and the Energizer Bunny need to have a little chat. If that pink, fuzzy, shades wearing mammal can hook my phone up and help to keep my phone alive for potentially more than a day, I’ll be forever grateful.
I’m sure I’m not the only one, who is ever increasingly frustrated about the lack of battery life of my Smartphone. I love the fact that I can surf the internet, text, and talk all at the same time, while keeping up on my feed subscriptions, checking game scores, and weather reports. Yes, I enjoy all of these luxuries, but they KILL the battery. By 8 pm, if I’m nowhere near a charger, it’s a wrap.
So, no surprise, I need help. I found an article that claims that it can help to give your lithium-ion battery more stamina. They actually list some very good tips:
Their first tip is to reconsider your network. The C.D.M.A. mobile standard used by Verizon takes more power than the G.S.M. used by AT&T and T-Mobile. For those who use their phones constantly, you may consider switching your network provider if they provide the coverage you need. For a T-Mobile user like myself, this looks promising. :
Another tip is to dim your LCD screen. The brighter the screen, the more juice you lose. So if you’re in a dimly lit room, dim the screen as well. Or, if your phone comes with an auto-dimmer be sure to use it.
You can also disconnect your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth searching tools when not in use.
The article lists a good bit more that will save you from the slow singing and flower bringing for your battery. Being as desperate as I am, I’m going to try these techniques right now! Let me know if you do!
Do you know of any other ways to save your battery life from an unflattering fate?
A Lot of Surprises at the Oscars

Honestly, this is the first Acadamy Award show that I sat all the way through. In recent years, I would be a channel flipper and only catch the categories that I wanted to see. I think that this was actually an entertaining show; not performance wise (even though that dance troupe was HOT, and seeing as how there really wasn’t many performances, except for Neil Patrick Harris’ opening), but because of the films that were nominated.
One of the biggest, if not THE biggest surprise of the night, was that ‘Avatar’ was not the “big winner” of the night. I actually had all of my money on the fact that the James Cameron film was going to get the top honor. I haven’t even seen ‘Hurt Locker’. I will definitely be watching this week however, to make sure that it was “Oscar worthy”. It had better been, with the six awards that it won, including the “big 2″: Best Picture and Best Director.
What did not surprise me, was that Sandra Bullock recieved her very first Acadamy Award for her stunning performance in “The Blind Side”. I truly think that she deserved it. Funny thing though; when I was watching the Barbara Walter’s Oscar Night Special, Sandra Bullock mentioned that she wouldn’t cry. She said that her mother would get on her for crying. But when she accepted her award, her emotions overcame her, and she almost let go. I thought it was very touching.
Congrats to all winners and nominees!
What did you think of the Oscars? Were you surprised with the results?

The Hummer’s Last Ride
March 3, 2010 by akemp
That’s all folks. The Hummer, one of America’s most symbiotic cars of machoism, is finally riding off into the sunset.
General Motors last week announced the likely end of the Hummer after a deal with a Chinese automaker fell through.
For those who opposed the huge vehicle, they’re ecstatic about the news. But for Hummer owners, they have mixed feelings. Many are just happy that the cars wouldn’t be outsourced to China.
Owners are hoping for a last-minute buyer to emerge before the Hummer joins the maligned Pinto in the scrapyard. GM has said it is trying to salvage the Hummer, setting May 1 as a deadline for other possible deals to be made.
I don’t know how I feel about GM no longer making Hummers. I’ve always felt that they were tough on gas, especially in this economy, but for those who could afford it, to each their own. Just because they are no longer making it, doesn’t mean that the ones already on the roadway are taking a permanent seat in the garage. I’m also pretty sure that the military will still be using them until they find something bigger and better.
How do you feel about the soon disappearance of the Hummer?
