With the whole ‘go green’ movement and Earth Day a couple days away, more people have been striving towards the DIY: Do It Yourself products. This can be anywhere from making your own grocery bags, to using spirits as fabric fresheners, to using ketchup as a cleaner. There are endless possibilities to what you could use and to what you could make. The DIY project that I’m bringing to you today is laundry detergent.

Supplies:

  • 1 bar of Fels Naptha soap
  • 1 cup of Borax
  • 1 cup of Washing Soda
  • 1/4 cup of OxyClean

Here are the steps, from Modern Cottage:

  1. Grate the Fels Naptha soap with a cheese grater. It should come out to about 2 cups.
  2. “Mix it all together into a bumpy, granular mix. Don’t worry about stuff getting correctly dispersed, even if it doesn’t quite look like it does.”
  3. Store it in a sealed container.
  4. Use 1 tablespoon for a light load, and 2 tablespoons for a large or dirty load.
  5. If you like, add essential oils to the mix to give your clothes a fruity, floral, or fresh scent.
  6. Stay clean!

Are you an Xbox or PlayStation 3 fanatic? If you are, did you know that you can go green too? It’s as simple as turning off your system when you’re not using it.

When plugged in, the systems use nearly the same amount of power when they are turned on and left idle, as they do when you’re playing a game or watching a movie. So in order to save energy and money on your electric bill, just head your parents’ advice and turn off the system when you’re not using it. That goes for everything from the room lights, to running water, to computers.

Do your part and help us get the Earth back to where it should be!
